The article discussed the author’s point of view on smart home devices.

For this column, I will share my thoughts on the article “Controlling My family’s Smart Home Is Driving Is Mad” by Simon Hill and share my experience with smart home gadgets.

There are many controversies on the benefits and efficiencies of utilizing smart products/ assistants to make lives easier and more accessible. I do agree with the author about the inconvenience that his family experienced with the appliances because I have encountered a similar process, and I decided to omit innovative tech assistance since then.

I used to install automatic lighting in my dressing room because I think it would be convenient as I enter the room, the lights would turn on. But neither that I expected the lights was on timer mode for a few minutes and would turn off while I was still in the area. At that time, I did not have manual switches, so I had to move for the lights to turn on again and I felt annoyed. I had a walk-in dressing room next to my bed and it bothered me when I walk past it at night, the lights would turn on for a few minutes and then turn off. Smart lighting isn’t that smart after all.

I also had a robot vacuum to help me with chores and I thought it was cool and would save me time cleaning the house. But the experience wasn’t as expected because it took too long to complete a cycle and the noise it made when touching the furniture wasn’t pleasing too. I always bump into it. I then realized that a little exercise from mopping the floor won’t bother me as much as the smart vacuum machine.

The innovative products do partly helps improve life, but I prefer the traditional ways to save time and more convenient for everyone in the family to use. If you have the same experience, feel free to share your story below. Or let me know if you are a fan of smart home products.
